To understand why war has broken out with Cove we must look at the events that took place on the build up to the current situation.
The Northern Republic did consist of Vesper, Cove and Minoc. Whilst Cove wished to break off and become independent once more, Chancellor Escaflowne was attempting to keep the nations unified and work together for a better future. Things were rocky but both sides were keeping an open mind and giving it a chance. That was until it all went to shit.
An old declaration put into force by the previous leader of the Republic, Empress Anna Goodward, stated that the Vesper Redguard had authority over the Covian Soldiers. Chancellor Escaflowne had no intention of enforcing this old document but during an arguement between some Covians and Vesparians, a Vesparian attempted to use the declaration against Cove. Now that Cove had learnt such a document existed Baron Octiovus travelled to Vesper and demanded access into the library where it was stored and the treaty handed over. The Baron was refused access to the library for security reasons of other sensitive documents stored within.
The Baron returned to Vesper with a large army of Covian and Yewish soldiers where they proceeded to firebomb the library, burning it down with all documents inside. Vesper was furious that a civilian building had been bombed but against a force that large were powerless to prevent it. The following days saw Cove leave the Republic and a number of other buildings in Vesper firebombed although no culprits were ever found.
Chancellor Escaflowne gathered the citizens of the Republic to address the nation and vote on whether to go to War. Together as a nation the Republic came to the decision that war was not a viable option in the state of the Republic at the time. The Republic had neither the resources or the manpower to fight a war with Cove. Instead Vesper began operations to bolster their defenses and prepare for the prospect of war. Chancellor Escaflowne conducted a number of meetings with Cove who would not provide compensation or even admit to any wrong doing. Tensions were very high but the peace was kept for the time being. Armed military personel in uniforms were not permitted to step foot on either nations lands.
Tensions with Cove continued for some time with constant acts of provocation and aggression towards Vesper even with the Baron marching the Covian army onto Vesper lands as a show of force on multiple occasions. The Republic held a private town meeting to discuss the imminent threat of war.
In one of the last peaceful interactions with Cove, Vesper travelled to Cove to arrange a meeting on neutral ground in Trinsic. An agreement was made not to carry out any acts of aggression towards each other until the meeting. Within days Cove and Yew sailed their warships with their armies on board to Vesper beach, breaking the agreement and attempting to intimidate the Republic.
Looking back upon it all, it is clear there was never any chance for a peaceful solution. Time and time again Cove and Yew have shown they had no intentions for peace. If the old treaty didn't spark these tensions then their church would have, whom wish to see Vesper purged of it's warlocks and non human citizens.
They wish to see our nation burn and our way of life eradicated from the lands. They would of found any reason to justify their aggression. The only choice for the Republic was war.
